Baden Wass – 100th Game

Saturdays VAFA Premier C division seventh round had Oakleigh playing host to Old Haileybury in a triple header at Scammell Reserve which turned out to be a good day for the visitors. The main game was a bruising affair as both sides went hammer and tongs at each other and the pressure was enormous. Old Haileybury took the early initiative with the first two majors before the Krushers, with Baden Wass playing his 100th game, could get settled and hit back. Another 2 goals to the visitors had the Oakleigh faithful frowning before two trademark long bombs from Bromley put Oakleigh 5 points down at the first change. The second term saw the Oaks claim the lead through Cloke on two occasions but counter attacks from the visitors gave them a 9 point advantage at the main break.

The third term was an arm wrestle with only 2 goals scored for the quarter and the difference at the last change was 10 points in favour of the visitors. Although the Krushers threw everything into the last quarter, mistakes proved costly and Haileybury managed to survive the challenge to win by 15 points. Aaron Cloke finished with 5 goals for Oakleigh with Trevor Bromley adding 3. Stuart Wines, Pat Ioannidis and Shane Borland were in the Krushers best.

The reserves game saw an undermanned Oakleigh outfit take it right up to their guests for half a game before falling away in the second half. After trailing by 5 goals to 1 in the first term, the Oaks hit back to go into the second 2 goals behind and carried the momentum into the second where they narrowed the gap to a solitary point at the long break. Unfortunately the Oaks failed to stick with the visitors after the break and eventually lost by 46 points. Jake Benoiton booted 5 for Oakleigh and Shaun Briggs, Corey Moore and Jaryd Wines were in the Oaks best.

The U/19s proved to be Oakleighs highlight for the day with a gutsy, come-from-behind win against Old Haileybury in their U/19 section 4 clash. After trailing at every change during the game, the young Krushers lifted in the last term and ran over the visitors to post a thrilling 14 point win. Anmol Malhotra led the goal kicking with 4 for Oakleigh with Lucas Cloke adding 2. Chris Pearson, Lucas Cloke and Nathan Fredericks were among the Oakleigh’s best.
