Oakleigh’s joy from last week’s success was short lived as reality bit back on Saturday at Glenhuntly Oval when Caulfield Grammarians proved too good. Having first use of a stiff breeze, the Oaks got away well and were looking good but the hosts hit back to take a 1 goal lead into the first break. There were fears that Caulfield would brush the Krusher’s aside in the second term with the wind at their backs but the Oaks lifted their game to hit the front midway through the quarter but a rally by the Fields put them 13 points up at the long break.
Needing a big third quarter, the Krusher’s worked hard but found the Caulfield defence hard to crack and slipped to a 24 point deficit at the last change. The Oak battled through the last quarter but couldn’t keep up with the Fields who ran away to a 47 point win. Trevor Bromley led Oakleigh’s goal kicking with 4, Josh Revere added 3 and Aaron Cloke booted 2. Pat Ioannidis and Dermot Cleary were among the Oaks best.
The reserves game was a one-sided affair as Oakleigh were no match for a rampant Caulfield. Despite some fine efforts from Chris Mercuri, Chris Grant and Andrew Weymouth, the Krusher’s simply couldn’t keep up with the Grammarians who won by 124 points.
The U/19s travelled to Central Reserve for a meeting with Mazenod and, after trailing by 4 goals at quarter time, came back to level the scores at the main change. A goal less third term proved costly for the young Krusher’s putting them 25 points adrift at the last change and a 7 goal last term by Mazenod to Oakleigh’s 5 goals had the Nodder’s 38 points in front at the bell. Dylan Goodwill kicked 4 goals for Oakleigh with Chris Galanos and Lucas Cloke adding 2 each. Ed Standish, Brodie Weymouth and Jake Ford were in the Oaks best.
