ROUND 14 MATCH REVIEW
Oakleigh’s quest to avoid relegation received a huge boost on Saturday as they clobbered bitter rivals Peninsula by 10 goals at Scammell Reserve in the VAFA C grade rd.14. Riding a wave a new found confidence, the Krushers leapt out of the blocks with 2 goals in the first minute and a half and had a 4 goal lead before the Pirates could trouble the scorers. Peninsula hit back to level the scores at the first change but the die had been cast and the Krushers were up and about again in the second term taking advantage of the wind adding 6-6 whilst holding Peninsula to 4 points going to the long break with a 38 point lead and whole lot of confidence.
After the break the Oaks kept the pressure up with back line again standing tall to hold the Pirates to 3 goals with the breeze. At the other end, the Oakleigh forwards booted another 4 and effectively finished the visitors off by the last change as the difference crept out to 42 points. With the final use of the wind for the day, the Oaks were relentless, if not ruthless, as they ran hard and tackled hard and ground the Pirates down with a dominating display of no-nonsense football that never let Peninsula get going. Trevor Bromley was again the main destroyer up forward with 7 goals with Tim Scott adding 3 and David Counihan in his 150th game kicking what someone suggested was his first goal since 2010. Lee Barrand along with the Holden brothers, Peter and Kevin, were among the best players for Oakleigh.
The early game saw the Oakleigh reserves struggle gamely but to no avail as they succumbed by 48 points after a struggling to stay in touch with the Pirates who made much better use of the wind. Steve Tolongs booted 3 goals for Oakleigh with Matt Wass and Jack Van Den Ven among the best players.
The U/19s had an early start against Parkdale at Gerry Green Reserve but had little trouble disposing of the competition cellar dwellers booting 23 goals to the Vultures 1. Oakleigh players were lining up to kick goals against their hapless opponents in what was more of a training run for the Krushers.
