Oakleigh started the season in fine style with a crushing 81 point victory over Old Camberwell at Gordon Barnard Reserve on Saturday. In fine sunny conditions, with Liam Gillard playing his 50th game, the Oaks went hard early drawing first blood and looked to be making it a one-sided affair until the hosts hit back to trail by 3 points at the first change. The Krushers again came out firing in the second storming out to a 4 goal lead before fading as Old Camberwell hit back once more going to the long break with an 11 point deficit. After half-time Oakleigh took control booting 6 goals to 1 in the third term and charging home with an 8 goal final quarter holding Old Camberwell to 2. Oakleigh’s goal kickers were led by Aaron Cloke with 6, Dermot Clearly kicked 4 and Tim Scott added 3. Shane Borland, Trevor Bromley and Pat Ioannidis booted 2 each. Jim Hunt was among Oakleigh’s best along with Shane Borland and Pat Ioannidis.
The Reserves with Chris Mercuri in his 100th game and Gonzo Valenzuela in his 50th game, battled hard against an inaccurate opponent but managed to keep in touch and even when Old Camberwell jumped out to a 2 goal lead late in the last quarter, the Krushers refused to concede and fought back to snatch the lead in the dying minutes and looked to have grabbed a stunning win before a late goal to the hosts decided the result with some controversy over the actual finish time. There may be more about this game later. Simon Berman led Oakleigh’s goal kicking with 4 and Matt Bennett, Aaron Binns and Adam Mathiesson were among the best for the Krushers.
The U/19s hosted Beaumaris at Elsternwick Park and struggled with a lack of numbers and inaccuracy along with a formidable opposition. Although they struggled, they didn’t give in and showed some good signs with Lucas Cloke kicking 3 goals and some good efforts from Luke Pappon, Scott Johnstone and Aaron Tran.
